Boiling down sap!

Golden Axe - Silver Axe

Do you ever wonder where old children's stories come from?

Every so often in the country we experience the source of such wonders.

One late afternoon I carried down a large pot to dump in the contents from the awaiting and overflowing sap jugs we had hung on the maple trees.  Well not being very careful while I was fumbling to unhook the jug full of sap I dropped the large pot and it bounced away from me and rolled down the slope and went right into the roaring creek!  It happened so quick and because it had been raining the day before the creek had swelled up with fast moving deep water.  The instant that the pot landed in the water  I knew it was gone for good and I was reminded of the story of the 'golden axe and the silver axe'.

and you fill it up with sweet, sweet, sap! ~~

In the spring when nights freeze and days are thawed, maple sap flows out anywhere from 1-2 gallons a day.  We take great care not to hurt the trees any more than to drill just a small hole to lightly pound in the tap and hang the bucket (in our case empty milk jugs).   Every time we collect the sap we remember to thank the trees for giving us delicious sap to make sweet sweet maple syrup!
